Liraglutide Cost: Saxenda's List Price, Generics and Pens per Month

Saxenda's published list price, why it is being discontinued, the generic that now carries its label, and how many daily-dose pens make a month.

ByDerek MossPricing analystPublished

Saxenda has a list price of $1,349.02[1]. Novo Nordisk says most people whose plan covers weight drugs do not pay list[1]. The page does not name the pack that figure buys.

Liraglutide is the drug in Saxenda. It is a daily injection, not a weekly one. That changes how a month is counted. Other fees are in the peptide therapy cost guide.

How many pens a month

Each Saxenda pen holds 18 mg[3]. The adult maintenance dose is 3 mg daily[3]. So one pen lasts 6 days at that dose.

The label sells packs of 3 and 5 pens[3]. A 5-pen pack covers 30 days at maintenance. A 3-pen pack covers 18.

The first month uses less. The label starts at 0.6 mg daily and rises weekly to 3 mg by week 5[3].

The brand is being discontinued

Novo Nordisk is discontinuing Saxenda[2]. Last shipments to wholesalers are due in late January 2027[2]. The company says safety and quality are not the reason[2].

So a Saxenda price is a short-lived price. Plan for what replaces it.

Generic liraglutide

A generic already carries Saxenda’s indication. Teva’s liraglutide label covers weight reduction in adults with obesity[4]. It is sold in 5-pen packs[4].

Check which generic is on the prescription. Another Teva liraglutide label is the diabetes product, with doses up to 1.8 mg[5]. That one is not the weight product.

That is a thin market: 4 sellers. One price change moves the median. Each seller counts once, at its lowest monthly figure. The detail is on the liraglutide price board.

What the price buys

The main trial ran 56 weeks in 3,731 adults without type 2 diabetes[6]. They took 3 mg daily or placebo, with lifestyle counseling[6].

Mean weight fell 8.4 kg on liraglutide and 2.8 kg on placebo[6]. 63.2% lost at least 5% of their weight, against 27.1% on placebo[6].

The label sets a checkpoint. It says to stop if weight has not fallen 4% by week 16[3]. That caps a non-response at four months of cost.

Coverage for weight drugs is uneven. The insurance guide walks through it.

FAQ

4 questions

How much does liraglutide cost?

Novo Nordisk publishes a list price for Saxenda, shown on this page, without naming the pack it buys, and says most people whose plan covers weight-management drugs do not pay list. The typical monthly price from sellers that publish one is computed on this page from a small market.

Is Saxenda being discontinued?

Yes. Novo Nordisk says it is discontinuing Saxenda, with last shipments to wholesalers in late January 2027, and that the decision is not about safety or quality.

Is there a generic Saxenda?

Yes. Teva's liraglutide label carries the same weight-management indication and comes in 5-pen packs. A separate generic liraglutide label is the diabetes product, so check which one is prescribed.

How many Saxenda pens do I need a month?

At the 3 mg maintenance dose, one 18 mg pen lasts 6 days, so a 5-pen pack covers 30 days.
